I live and work in Thailand for 20 plus years and I have seen a lot of colleagues in the production business coming, and I have seen many going. If you come to the land of smiles to make a living in the jungle it is quite hard to get a firm foothold. You need to figure out what the market is, find a niche, redefine yourself and get ready to wear many hats. You need to diversify - just doing sound or camera is not enough. You need to learn to produce, edit and be willing to do hard work in the scorching sun or sometimes uncomfortable or even hostile environments.
When I first met Maurice (how many years ago is that?) he had just arrived in Asia and at the beginning of a winding, uneven road. He asked me: "Do you think I can make it here?" My answer was that this entirely depended on him. I have seen some who did and others who didn't. You have to be persistent if you want to get a foot in the door.
Over the years we did a couple of jobs together. Maurice worked as news cameraman and editor for our company. We became friends and had lots of inspiring discussions about the world, culture, spirits and all the technical toys we love to use. But Living Films could not provide enough work to keep him going. So Maurice went on to re-invent himself as a successful creative video artist to create numerous projects listed on this site. So I was quite happy to see that he was one of the few who made it!
What it comes down to is probably the believe in oneself. I know Maurice has it. And that automatically leads to clients and coworkers who share that trust.
